Keep your tags tidy.

Tidy Tags requires Craft CMS 5.0.0 or later and PHP 8.2 or later. There are no additional services or dependencies — everything runs inside your existing Craft install.

Yes — multi-site is first-class. Every view is site-aware: choose “All sites” to see every tag once keyed to the primary site with its translations in sibling columns, or scope to a single site for focused editing.

Every relation pointing at a source tag is repointed to the target tag inside a single database transaction. If an entry already linked to the target, the duplicate row is dropped so you don't end up with two relations to the same tag. Source tags are then deleted cleanly across all sites.

That is up to you. Out of the box it clusters titles by Levenshtein edit distance with a threshold of 2, which you can raise or lower (1–6) on the Duplicates page with the ?threshold=N query parameter. If your tags are a controlled vocabulary rather than free text, you can switch to the strict strategy instead — see the question below. The Duplicates page has two scopes: Within source for clusters inside a single tag group or section, and Across sources for clusters that span more than one source — useful when a stray Tag has been created for something already maintained as a Team or Competition.

Because edit distance is the wrong tool for proper nouns, and the default strategy uses it. Short names like Essex and Sussex are two characters apart while being completely unrelated, so any threshold loose enough to catch a real typo also pairs unrelated entities. Worse, the variation that actually occurs in a controlled list is a whole word rather than a typo — FC Bayern Munich and Bayern Munich are three edits apart, so no threshold reaches them. Switch Match strategy to strict and it compares titles after stripping affixes like FC and AFC from the ends, with no edit distance at all. Read more.

No, and that case is exactly why the strict strategy has a qualifier list. Words like Women, Ladies, II, Reserves and U21 mark a genuinely different entity, so when one title carries one and the other does not, the match is vetoed outright. The same guard keeps County Championship apart from County Championship One. The default list is football-shaped, so if you cover another sport or a non-sport vocabulary entirely, expect to curate it against your own titles.

No. The fuzzy strategy is the default and behaves identically to previous releases — the same clusters, the same thresholds, the same results. Nothing changes until you deliberately switch strategy, and if you set an unrecognised value the plugin falls back to fuzzy rather than quietly matching nothing.

No. The warning is an informational amber notice that appears below the field after a short debounce. It checks the bound tag group and every configured tag-like entry section, links directly to any matches, and never gates creation — it's there to nudge editors toward existing taxonomy across sources.

Tidy Tags uses Craft's default accessPlugin-tidytags permission. Assign it to any user group that should be allowed to view or manage tags through the dashboard.

Yes — drop a config/tidytags.php file into your project to overlay tag-like sections and per-source field config per-environment. The settings screen handles everything you need by default, and the similarity threshold is a query parameter on the Duplicates page. See Configuration.

It's a good idea to clear Craft's element and template caches with php craft clear-caches/all. The merge itself is transactional and safe; clearing caches just makes sure front-end templates see the new state immediately.
