Troubleshooting

I don't see Tidy Tags in the control panel sidebar

First, confirm the plugin is installed at Settings → Plugins. If it's installed but hidden, the current user is probably missing the accessPlugin-tidytags permission — see Permissions. Admin accounts always see it.

Front-end templates still show the old tag after a merge

Craft caches element and template output aggressively. After a large merge, clear the caches:

php craft clear-caches/all

Entry relations update in the same transaction as the merge, so no data is lost — it's just a cache refresh issue.

The duplicate scanner isn't finding an obvious duplicate

The scanner uses Levenshtein edit distance. Two tags with the same letters in a different order (for example, Widget Testing vs. Testing Widget) are a long edit distance apart even though they're semantically similar. Bump the threshold with ?threshold=N (up to 6) to catch looser matches, or use the group view's search box to find and merge them manually.

The “did you mean?” warning doesn't appear

A few things to check:

  • The warning only fires when the editor types a title that doesn't already match an existing tag — it's for new tags in progress.
  • Browser console errors usually point at a missing CSRF token or a blocked asset bundle. Check the network tab for a call to tidytags/tags/check-duplicate.
  • The user must have accessPlugin-tidytags, because the check endpoint requires it.

A merge failed partway through

Merges run inside a single database transaction, so a failure mid-way is rolled back automatically and your tag data is left exactly as it was before you started. If you hit a reproducible failure, grab the error from storage/logs/web.log and open an issue.

Pairs well with Tidy Tags

Small changes to the control panel that editors notice on day one. Better filters, a real media library, sidebar fields, watermarks and uploads that don't time out.
